USDA Hardiness Zones 4 - 9 Height 6 - 8 Feet Spread 6 - 8 Feet Dandy Man Purple Rhododendron was developed by Joe Parks, who devoted himself to developing rhododendrons that could thrive in the climate of New England. Gardeners now have an excellent option to grow rhododendrons in northern states up to growing zone 4a with this new Proven Winners ColorChoice plant! Rhododendron are an evergreen shrub that blooms in the spring. The Dandy Man Purple, Purple Rhododendron x 'LAVJ2011', has dark green foliage year round, with beautiful purple flowers that put on a show from early spring to early summer. We love using these shrubs as foundational plantings, in gardens, and especially in garden planters as the focal point. Dandy Man Purple Rhododendron Care The Dandy Man Purple Rhododendron has a resistance to phytophthora, a root rot disease that can often plague rhododendrons. These shrubs prefer acidic soils with a pH between 5.5-7.5. Ensure that the soil is well drained but moist. We also recommend adding a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and protect the roots in harsh winters. Fertilize in spring with a rhododendron fertilizer that can be purchased from the local home and garden store. Pruning Dandy Man Purple Rhododendrons should be done with care. Trim lightly after the bush is done flowering in early spring. But you should not trim too much, as this plant blooms on old wood. Dandy Man Purple Rhododendron Spacing Plant these shrubs 6 to 9 feet apart center on center. If you grow in a garden planter, be sure to use a large planter that is at least 5 feet wide. For mass plantings, we recommend planting 9 feet apart, center on center.
